Upcoming

SMEs in Decentralized Energy Services Conference

Hotel Cambodiana

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

April 6-7, 2009

Sponsored by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the World Bank Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) with funding from the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom.

Improving energy service delivery to the poor is a key factor in reducing poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  By working with the domestic private sector there is an ability to unlock the market, promote domestic investment by leveraging market-based resources, and enhance the capacity of local private sector providers as well as NGOs providing not-for-profit services on a commercial basis.

The Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom supports a program by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) to help the local private sector provide energy services to the underserved and unserved in the developing world.  The ESMAP Energy SME Program, through a grant from DFID, supports governments to engage small and medium enterprises (SME) in providing access to sustainable and affordable energy services in small towns, peri-urban and rural areas.

The SMEs in Decentralized Energy Services Conference will support the sustainability of SMEs as energy service providers through stimulating cross-fertilization and sharing of experience amongst Energy SME entrepreneurs, energy policy decision makers and the development community. The conference will showcase both the results and experiences of the ESMAP funded Energy SME Program as well as other decentralized energy service programs in Cambodia and Lao PDR. A number of case studies will be presented and will focus on the business models that have been developed and lessons learned from these decentralized energy service programs.
